The 3 Florida Saltwater Gamefish That Every Angler Should Face

Many fishing experts, professionals, and enthusiasts would cite Florida as the sportfishing capital of the world. Florida certainly ranks among the best for the pursuit of classic freshwater quarries like bass and catfish species. However, the biggest fish, hardest fights, and most challenging tests of angling endurance are only found in the deep (or shallow) blue sea. Being prepared to hunt the following titans of saltwater angling is a must. So, pack some sunscreen, stay hydrated, put on your performance fishing shirts, and hold on tight.

Preparing for Dream-Come-True Gamefish

Florida’s subtropical and tropical climate can transition quickly from beautifully sunny and sultry to punishingly hot and humid. Days on the open water of Florida’s coastal fisheries are no joke. Bring more food and water than you think you’ll need, and protect yourself with sunscreen and clothing that covers most of your skin. To keep covered without overheating, choose professional-grade fishing shirts made from lightweight, breathable, high-performance polyester or technical fabric. Bring a hat, polarized sunglasses, and consider a high-performance fishing mask as well. Now, onto the fish.

Marlin—Kings of the Billfish

It might be hard to argue with the claim that marlin, kings of the billfish, are also the ultimate gamefish. Blue marlin are sleek, beautiful, predatory torpedoes that have been recorded up to 16-feet long and over 1500 pounds. Black marlin have been clocked at speeds as fast as 80 mph underwater. Not to mention that their faces are equipped with a spear, and they fight like no other. What’s the best thing to bring to this fight? Patience. Reeling them in can take time, in short, quick bursts, but the payoff of landing one is worth the fight.

Sailfish—Agile and Beautiful Hunters

While smaller than their marlin cousins, sailfish are no less feisty. Due to that size difference, some anglers underestimate the tenacity and power of these hard-shaking, high-jumping, fierce-fighting beauties, to their detriment. Thought by many to be the fastest fish in the ocean, sailfish can leap as fast as 70 mph. They can explode into drag-screaming runs that have literally pulled unwary anglers into the drink. And that’s nowhere you want to be with an angry sailfish. Like the marlin, they are always armed.

Tarpon—An Acrobatic Adrenaline Ride

Many argue that pound for pound, the tarpon is the best fighter in the ocean. There’s virtually no argument that they are the most acrobatic. Tarpon can reach 8 feet and push 300 pounds and are famous for leaping up to 10 feet straight up or 20 feet horizontally! When tarpon jump, they’re also prone to rattling their gills in a striking display of defiance. Plus, their skittish disposition and bony mouths make getting them on the line in the first place a challenge.

About Gillz®

Kent Hickman has loved fishing for as long as he can remember. As a Florida native, there certainly wasn’t any shortage of world-class fishing to be had growing up, and he made the most of it. As an adult, that love of angling brought Kent to the professional tournament circuit. It was there that he encountered a problem: professional anglers often faced unforgiving conditions, and he couldn’t find any reputable fishing apparel that could stand up to the challenge. Whether they’re pros or not, hard-core anglers need gear they can rely on to stay cool, dry, and comfortable. That means gear that protects them from both the elements and the heat and UV rays of the unrelenting Florida sun. Kent took it upon himself to meet the challenge, and in 2009 he founded Gillz® to ensure that devoted anglers had access to high-performance, high-tech, professional-grade, and, of course, stylish fishing apparel. Gillz® apparel includes fishing masks, shirts for fishing, hats, shades, accessories, and more.

Small Details That Can Make the Difference Between Getting Skunked and Landing a Trophy on the Water

It’s easy to forget the little details. Even experienced, professional anglers forget to bring everything they need or update their clothing every once in a while. It certainly makes sense to do research on your fishing territory, study seasonal feeding and spawning habits, and invest in specialized gear. As often as not, however, it’s the little details determining whether or not you’re getting fish in the boat. Never forget the basics. Sometimes that process is as simple as picking up a hook file and some performance fishing shirts . Performance Fishing Shirts Trade Out Your Line Many anglers put a lot of thought into the line they use. A lot of thought and time goes into deciding what pound test you should be using, whether to go with mono or braided, and whether to use a blue, green, or clear line. Switching out your line when it’s getting old is a step that’s easy to forget and overlook. That’s particularly true for anglers with a dozen different rigs in the...

4 Ways to Make Your Fishing Time Even More Fun

For the average angler, it’s hard to imagine many activities more fun than fishing. It can be both relaxing and exciting. It can be a great way to bond with friends and family or the perfect way to spend some you-time recharging. Sometimes it’s worthwhile to make some changes and try new things. Whether that entails incorporating some high-performance fishing shirts into your routine or hiring a guide, trying something new can recapture some of that first-started-fishing exhilaration. It can make fishing even more fun. Fishing Mask  Go Somewhere New One easy way to try something new is to go somewhere new. Haunting familiar honey-holes in familiar water is certainly a great way to spend the day, but there’s a distinct buzz that accompanies stalking quarry in new territory. Consider making it a trip to really new territory. Rather than hauling your boat to a reservoir or lake in the next city or county, why not a jaunt a few hours away, or even across state lines. Just be sure you...

3 Tips to Help You Reel in Bigger Fish Than Ever This Summer

It’s summer, and with the heat means changing up your strategy for fishing. From knowing where to find the biggest fish to how to handle the high temperature by using performance fishing shirts , here are some tips for making the most of summer fishing to catch the big one.  Performance Fishing Shirts Know Where the Fish Are Biting First, know where the fish are biting. Thanks to the blazing ball of heat overhead, there can be a lot of reflection on the water. First, cut through the surface with polarized sunglasses, which can help you see the fish. Next, you need to know where to look. Depending on what you are fishing for, they may change from their typical hideouts during the rest of the year. For example, bass seek colder water as they grow bigger, so warm water, closer to the surface, will only have small fish. Meanwhile, if you are fly fishing for trout, focus on the times when the water is coolest in the morning and late evening, as that is when they come out to feed. Much l...
