Chasing the Dolphinfish: Fishing for Mahi-Mahi is the Most Fun You’ll Have on the Water

A fair few tourists to Florida’s coast have likely been shocked and dismayed to hear local anglers passionately recounting their recent success catching, and likely eating, “dolphin.” There’s no need to fret, however, Flipper faces no peril. Among Florida’s coastal anglers and many on the Gulf Coast, “dolphins” are actually dolphinfish, aka dorado, aka mahi-mahi. And fishing for them is just about the most fun one can have on a boat. Before you go, however, invest in some high-performance shirts for fishing and stock up on sunscreen.

What Makes Mahi-Mahi Fishing Such a Thrill

Where to begin? Dolphinfish are delicious, fight like hell, and are among the most beautiful fish in the sea. “Dorado” is from the Spanish for “golden” due to the dolphin’s stunning gilded hue. However, they can also sport shades of blue, green, purple, and more with vibrant stripes and spots, all of which can shift based on their mood. They are voracious feeders and often pack hunters, so if a boat gets into a school of dolphinfish, it’s common for multiple reels to be letting out line while every angler onboard is fighting a hard-charging, high-jumping dorado.

How to Ensure You Have the Right Gear

Skin coverage is a must when spending hours on open water under those golden but unrelenting rays. Use sunscreen, and ensure you’re wearing the right performance fishing shirts. High-tech professional-grade polyester will provide UPF 50+ UV protection with ultra-lightweight material breathable enough to keep you cool and covered. It’s also fabricated for moisture-wicking, quick-drying comfort—essential for sustained comfort.

Why You Should Bring a Mask

Fishing masks are all the rage among the hard-core angling contingent for a good reason—it does for your face and neck what performance fishing shirts do for the upper body. For the ultimate in comfort, the coolest, and, frankly, the coolest looking one available, pick up a GillzMask™ model fishing mask from the performance fishing apparel outfit Gillz®. Along with blocking the sun, attacks from insects, and stinging spray, the GillzMask™ has gill-like pockets called GillzVents™ on each side of the neck. They refreshingly channel cool air over the neck and right down the back. It’s the way to go.

Where to Look for Dolphinfish

Dolphins are aggressive and will take prey where they can get it. They will hit lures, live bait, and dead bait; they can be taken on the surface with poppers or trolling at 85 meters. The key to reliable success with the dolphinfish, however, is cover. Floating mats of weeds, debris, or any cover that draws baitfish are likely to draw dolphins. Veteran dolphin hunters also keep their eyes peeled for flocks of birds above and on the water, which generally denotes a school of baitfish, and therefore dolphinfish, below.

About Gillz®

Since Kent Hickman can remember, he’s loved fishing. Being a Florida native, there was certainly no shortage of access to world-class fishing for him growing up, and Kent took full advantage of those opportunities from the start. In adulthood, his love of angling inspired Kent to fish the tournament circuit professionally. However, he ran into a problem: the conditions professional anglers faced on the water could be unforgiving, and Kent had not found any fishing apparel capable of standing up to the challenge. Hard-core anglers, professionals or not, need gear that keeps them cool, dry, and always comfortable. They need gear that provides protection from both the elements and the unrelenting heat and UV rays of the Florida sun. In response to this shortage of options, Kent met the challenge himself. In 2009, Kent Hickman founded Gillz® to provide devoted anglers with high-tech, high-performance, professional-grade, and always stylish fishing apparel. That apparel includes shirts for fishing, fishing masks, hats, accessories, and more.

Small Details That Can Make the Difference Between Getting Skunked and Landing a Trophy on the Water

It’s easy to forget the little details. Even experienced, professional anglers forget to bring everything they need or update their clothing every once in a while. It certainly makes sense to do research on your fishing territory, study seasonal feeding and spawning habits, and invest in specialized gear.
