It’s summer, and with the heat means changing up your strategy for fishing. From knowing where to find the biggest fish to how to handle the high temperature by using performance fishing shirts, here are some tips for making the most of summer fishing to catch the big one.

Know Where the Fish Are Biting
First, know where the fish are biting. Thanks to the blazing ball of heat overhead, there can be a lot of reflection on the water. First, cut through the surface with polarized sunglasses, which can help you see the fish. Next, you need to know where to look. Depending on what you are fishing for, they may change from their typical hideouts during the rest of the year. For example, bass seek colder water as they grow bigger, so warm water, closer to the surface, will only have small fish. Meanwhile, if you are fly fishing for trout, focus on the times when the water is coolest in the morning and late evening, as that is when they come out to feed. Much like bass, they will also go deeper to find colder water.
Stay Out on the Water Longer
You can fish all day, even if the best times are the morning and evening. However, if you do, you need to be prepared to beat the heat and the sun’s rays. You want to get shirts for fishing, made specifically for keeping you out on the water. Find a long sleeve shirt with a UPF 50+ rating, as this will help keep you from getting a sunburn. The fabric should also be moisture-wicking, which will help keep you cool while wicking away moisture from the river, lake, boat spray, or sweat. You’ll be dry and cool, even in the summer heat. If possible, find a shirt that integrates a fishing mask. All of this will help you stay out longer, giving you more time to fish. The more time you have to fish, the more chances you have to catch the big one, whether it’s coming home as dinner or taking a picture as a trophy before releasing it back to the wild.
Use the Right Equipment
A professional fishing mask will also help keep the sun off of you and keep your face protected. A high-quality fishing mask should feature vents that can direct airflow across your neck and downward, keeping you cool, especially when on a boat. Using the right equipment can not only help you stay comfortable but help you catch fish. You may want a fish finder if you are on a boat, as it can be harder to see them if they are deeper in a lake. For lures, use heavier plastic to help it sink faster, missing smaller fish. Bring a mix of live bait and lures, and remember that bass can see red. Keep your hooks sharp and get ready to land a strike.
About Gillz®
Growing up in Florida, Kent Hickman would take every opportunity to get out on the water and fish. Fishing has been his passion since he was young, and he eventually decided to wade into the professional pools, joining the tournament circuit. While at tournaments, he encountered a problem: He wasn’t able to find fishing gear that could meet the rigorous demands of professional anglers. The unrelenting Florida sun meant he needed fishing apparel that could keep him cool and also protect him from the sun’s rays and other elements. In 2009, he decided to make the apparel himself, founding Gillz® to create stylish shirts for fishing, fishing masks, accessories, and other high-quality fishing apparel for his fellow anglers. It’s your turn to grab your fishing rod and join the growing Gillz® fishing community.
