The Importance of UPF Protection in Your Summer Fishing Apparel

The summer heat can be hard to beat, but it’s still possible to fish in the sun with moisture-wicking clothes and shade. However, sunburns can still be a problem. The best way to protect yourself against the damaging sun’s rays is to get professional apparel, such as shirts for fishing that are UPF-rated. Here is what that means, and what gear you can get to ward off the sun.

What Is UPF Protection?

You are probably familiar with SPF, or sun protection factor, that rates sunscreen. UPF or ultraviolet protection factor is similar but is used to describe fabric and clothes. This could be for anything from swimming suits to performance fishing shirts. While SPF only provides protection from UVB rays, UPF covers both UVA and UVB rays. UPF 50+ is the highest rating, protecting you against 98% of the sun’s rays.

How Does UPF Protection Help While Fishing?

Wearing UPF-rated clothes will help you stay out longer in the sun, giving you more time to fish. Whether it’s on a boat, deep-sea fishing with little shade, or at a local lake with few trees to provide cover, UPF-rated fishing apparel gives you the advantage of time. More time means more chances to catch fish. The best UPF-rated clothes are quick-drying, which is highly desirable when out on the water.

Finding UPF-Rated Gear

If you are going fishing in the middle of a sizzling summer day, you will want a UPF-rated fishing mask, shirt, and shorts. The fishing mask will protect your face and neck from sunburn, spray, and bugs, while keeping you cool; the shirt and shorts will keep your body protected without overheating you. Your best bet is a long-sleeve UPF 50+ shirt with moisture-wicking fabric and an integrated fishing mask, as this will provide the best protection while keeping you dry and cool despite the summer heat, even in direct sunlight.

Do I Still Need a Hat and Sunglasses?

It’s best if you still have a hat and sunglasses, even if you have UPF-rated clothes. The hat will protect the top of your head and shade your eyes. It’s useful even if you have a full-head mask. The sunglasses, on the other hand, can protect your eyes. You want polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the water, and the polarization will also help you see through the surface, letting you see fish you wouldn’t be able to with the naked eye. Remember to still use sunscreen as an added layer of protection, and don’t be fooled by clouds as the sun’s rays can still cause a sunburn on a cloudy day.

About Gillz®

While Kent Hickman was growing up in his home state of Florida, he would jump at any chance he could get out on the water to cast fishing lines. Fishing was his passion even back then, and he eventually began to fish professionally, joining the tournament circuit. While fishing professionally, he couldn’t find fishing apparel that met the rigorous demands of professional anglers. The sun is unrelenting in Florida, and he found he needed fishing apparel with the ability to not only keep him cool, but to also protect him from the elements. In 2009, he decided to create what he needed himself, founding Gillz® to create stylish shirts for fishing, fishing masks, performance fishing gear, accessories, and other high-quality fishing apparel for his fellow anglers. Now it’s time for you to cast your line and join the growing Gillz® fishing community.
