Stay Out Fishing Longer in the Summer Heat with These Tips

The summer heat can often mean the best fishing is early in the morning, but this doesn’t have to be the case. You can beat the heat by wearing the right fishing apparel, such as shirts for fishing, as well as drinking plenty of water. These tips will help you stay out on the water for longer, giving you more time to catch the big one.

Pack Plenty of Water

First, always pack plenty of water. Bring more water than you think you will need. While it may be heavy, the longer you are out, the more water you will need. Make a conscious effort to stop and drink, staying hydrated. Use both water and something that can replenish your electrolytes, such as sports drinks. Stay away from sugary drinks or anything with caffeine. If you do bring a tumbler of coffee for early morning angling, bring more water to compensate.

Start Early in the Morning

Starting earlier in the day can help give you more time to cast lines out into the water. You can also fish later in the day when the temperature starts falling again. When the temperatures are lower, fish often tend to bite more. Essentially, choose the coolest parts of the day to fish. However, there is a way to mitigate the heat of the day.

Wear the Right Fishing Apparel

Find the right fishing apparel that will keep you cool during the day, such as performance fishing shirts. Look for shirts made of a material that will keep you cool, such as breathable moisture-wicking fabric that dries quickly. This is especially useful if you are fishing from a boat, but can also serve to wick away sweat while casting lines from the bank of a river. Vented shirts can help, as well, and shirts with a UPF 50+ rating can help combat sunburns.

Fish From the Shade

If possible, find shade and get out of the direct heat from the sun. You might find a shaded area with trees along the river bank or under a roofed area of the boat. Be careful not to get your line caught, however, and be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are fly fishing. Stop and take a break in the shade every so often. You can even use the break to hydrate.

Regularly Apply Sunscreen

Slather on the sunscreen wherever your skin is exposed. You can limit your exposure with UPF 50+ clothing, including wearing a fishing mask to cover your face, and a fishing hat for shade. If your hat exposes your ears, don’t forget sunscreen on the tops of your ears. Use a high-quality, high-SPF sunscreen, and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen throughout the day.

About Gillz®

Growing up in his home state of Florida, Kent Hickman would take any chance he could get to hit the water and cast out fishing lines. He stuck with fishing, eventually going on to fish professionally, joining the tournament circuit. It was while fishing professionally that he ran into trouble finding good fishing gear that would stand up to the demands of professional anglers. He found he needed apparel that would keep him comfortable and cool in the harsh Florida sun while protecting him from the elements. He took matters into his own hands in 2009 and founded Gillz® so he could provide his fellow anglers with stylish shirts for fishing, fishing masks, performance fishing gear, accessories, and other high-quality fishing apparel. It’s your turn to cast your line and join the growing fishing community that wears Gillz® apparel.

How to Prevent a Great Fishing Day From Being Ruined by the Elements

For anglers, a day of fishing is like the best parts of a vacation compressed into a single experience. It’s relaxing, it’s exciting, and it’s an invigorating interaction with nature. A great day on the water serves as a shedding of stress and a recharge to prepare to reenter the busy working world. Some professionals are even fortunate enough to compete and fish as a job.  Fishing Clothes That said, fishing with friends or family is unbeatable comradery and bonding time, while fishing alone is blissful isolation. Small Details That Can Make the Difference Between Getting Skunked and Landing a Trophy on the Water

It’s easy to forget the little details. Even experienced, professional anglers forget to bring everything they need or update their clothing every once in a while. It certainly makes sense to do research on your fishing territory, study seasonal feeding and spawning habits, and invest in specialized gear. As often as not, however, it’s the little details determining whether or not you’re getting fish in the boat. Never forget the basics. Sometimes that process is as simple as picking up a hook file and some performance fishing shirts . Performance Fishing Shirts Trade Out Your Line Many anglers put a lot of thought into the line they use. A lot of thought and time goes into deciding what pound test you should be using, whether to go with mono or braided, and whether to use a blue, green, or clear line. Switching out your line when it’s getting old is a step that’s easy to forget and overlook. That’s particularly true for anglers with a dozen different rigs in the...
