Fishing Upgrades to Beat the Heat Before Summer

Summer is coming up fast, and temperatures are already climbing higher. It’s harder to stay out on the water all day without getting too hot and packing it in. With these fishing apparel upgrades, you’ll stay cool even in the blazing sun, giving you more time to catch fish and have fun.

Wear Moisture-Wicking Shirts

If you plan to spend a long day on the water, but the heat is trying to spoil your plans, you need performance fishing clothes. You will want shirts made with moisture-wicking material. This will wick away sweat and spray from the water while still keeping you cool. It also dries faster than normal shirt materials, such as cotton. For even more utility, get a shirt that has a UPF rating, which will help stop sunburns, blocking UVA and UVB rays. Shirts with a cross breeze ventilation will help, especially when you are boating around, keeping you even cooler.

Protect Your Face with a Mask

For even more sun protection, try a mask with a vent. This keeps the sun off your face without fogging your sunglasses. More vents will also keep you cool while boating, like the above shirt. Vents leading down your back will help guide the flow of air, keeping you cool. Again, you will want UPF-rated material to help protect against the sun’s rays.

Wear Performance Pants or Shorts

The right pair of pants or shorts will help to keep you cool in the heat. Which you choose is a matter of personal preference, as long as they’re designed for ventilation and made with lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric, either will serve you well. Shorts with side zippers for ventilation can also help keep you cool, and you will want water-repelling material to stay comfortable when out on the water or when you are trekking alongside a stream. Once again, a UPF-rated material is a great boon when staying out all day. Stretchable fabric can help as you are angling and moving around to find a better fishing spot.

Use a Hoodie or Hat

You have two options for protecting your head, and they can be used together. A UPF-rated hoodie can take the place of a performance shirt, providing the same sun protection while adding a hood. A performance fishing hoodie will keep you cool if it’s made with the right fabric, such as GillzTec™ fabric from Gillz®. This, combined with the above fishing mask, can provide excellent protection against sunburn while still regulating your temperature, even in the hot sun. Either adding a hat to the hood or using a high-performance fishing shirt with a hat, can cover your head and provide shade for your face.

Bonus: Polarized Sunglasses for Seeing Underwater

If you are out in the heat, you will also want to shield your eyes from the sun. Polarized sunglasses will also help you see underwater, cutting through glare so you can see the fish moving under the surface. Choose a pair with lenses that are right for the environment you are fishing in, and you’ll have a great day in the sun.

About Gillz®

When Kent Hickman was still just a boy growing up in his home state of Florida, he would take any chance he could to get out and fish. Kent eventually went on to fish professionally and join the tournament circuit. While fishing professionally, he had trouble finding fishing gear that stood up to the demands of professional anglers. He needed apparel that kept him protected from the elements, comfortable, and cool while out fishing in the blazing Florida sun. In 2009, he founded Gillz® to provide his fellow anglers with stylish shirts for fishing, performance fishing gear, fishing masks, accessories, and other high-quality fishing apparel. Now it’s your turn to join the growing fishing community that loves to wear Gillz® apparel.

Tips for Catching the Big One This Fall

As summer slides into fall, many anglers stop going out, putting away their rods and winterizing their boats. However, they miss out on fantastic fishing opportunities. While bass is still the main fish, you can also find perch, pike, crappies, walleyes, and catfish, depending on where you are fishing. Here are some tips, from wearing the right fishing apparel to what type of bait to use, that will help you keep fishing into fall. Fishing Apparel Use Lipless Crankbaits Fall is when bass start eating more shad to prepare for winter. To mimic the small fish, use lipless crankbaits with a tight wobble. Bass often wait in shallow grass until there are shad nearby. Target the grass with the crankbait and get ready to land a bass. You can also use crankbait on the open water, where larger bass are likely to be found in the fall. The baitfish school up hundreds of yards from structures. You can go the simple route and use your radar, or just look for fish skimming the surface as the bass cha
