How to Avoid the Bass Fishing Mistakes Even Experienced Anglers Make

Whether it’s a job, project, or hobby, people tend to associate mistakes and oversights with beginners. The assumption is that once someone has accumulated enough experience, they’re not making those mistakes or oversights. That can certainly be the case, but familiarity with an activity can also breed complacency. Bass fishing is no exception, meaning that experts can absolutely make mistakes. The good news for bass anglers new and experienced is that those mistakes can be avoided and corrected fairly easily. In fact, sometimes it’s as easy as making sure you have the right gear, like performance fishing shirts to keep you comfortable and protected on the water.

Mistake #1: Cutting Corners with Fishing Gear

One of the most common ways in which experienced anglers get complacent is with the preparedness and treatment of gear, especially hooks and line. It becomes easy to forget the necessity to replace line or fail to replace imperfect or low-quality hooks with good ones. When you just want to fish, it’s tempting to use line that’s old or not the right pound test, figuring that it should be almost as good, rather than taking the time to switch it out. Don’t get complacent with your gear. Take the extra time to attach high-quality hooks, the right color or pattern lure, and use the right line for the job.

Mistake #2: Cutting Corners with Fishing Apparel

To avoid having your day ruined by weather you’re not ready for, remember this fishing apparel preparation solution: cover up. Find some long sleeve high-performance, lightweight, breathable fishing shirts from a trustworthy source. Pick up some fishing pants, preferably from the same trustworthy source. In the heat and sun, you’re not getting burned and are actually cooler because the sun’s off your skin, while your breathable fishing shirt allows for air flow-through. The best will be made with high-performance polyester, which is perfect for wicking away moisture and drying quickly. In cold weather, you have a long sleeve shirt to act as a bottom layer.

Mistake #3: Forgetting Your Head

When preparing your fishing outfit, don’t neglect to take care of your head. Invest in a good hat to keep you cooler and help to prevent sunburn. Purchase a good pair of polarized sunglasses to improve your in-water vision and protect your eyes from UV radiation. Finally, consider picking up a quality fishing mask. The right mask will do for your face exactly what other high-performance fishing gear does for your body—protects it from the elements and keeps you cool in the heat. Make sure your mask allows for airflow and doesn’t cause those sunglasses to fog up.

Mistake #4: Failing to Practice

Casting is a perishable skill, and it requires practice. By the time you’re on the water to fish, you should be benefitting from your practice, not practicing. Practice on a lawn, in a park, into a pool, into a local pond—anywhere you can cast at some targets to improve your aim.

Tips for Catching the Big One This Fall

As summer slides into fall, many anglers stop going out, putting away their rods and winterizing their boats. However, they miss out on fantastic fishing opportunities. While bass is still the main fish, you can also find perch, pike, crappies, walleyes, and catfish, depending on where you are fishing. Here are some tips, from wearing the right fishing apparel to what type of bait to use, that will help you keep fishing into fall. Fishing Apparel Use Lipless Crankbaits Fall is when bass start eating more shad to prepare for winter. To mimic the small fish, use lipless crankbaits with a tight wobble. Bass often wait in shallow grass until there are shad nearby. Target the grass with the crankbait and get ready to land a bass. You can also use crankbait on the open water, where larger bass are likely to be found in the fall. The baitfish school up hundreds of yards from structures. You can go the simple route and use your radar, or just look for fish skimming the surface as the bass cha
