The Gear You Need to Fish Better and Longer This Fall

Fall is one of the best times to fish, especially for bass. In areas like Florida, the temperatures are still warm, but the bass are getting ready for winter and are more aggressive, gorging on baitfish to bulk up. But, to fish better and longer than your competition, you need the right gear. From performance fishing shirts that will help you stay out longer in the sun to the right bait, these pieces of gear are exactly what you need to catch the big one in the fall.

Performance Fishing Shirts

Performance Apparel

You need the proper shirts for fishing if you are going to stay out longer than other anglers, especially in places where it is still warm. Shirts for fishing should have a UPF 50+ rating to keep sunburns away, and the shirt should be made with a moisture-wicking material. This will not only keep you dry from any ocean spray but will also keep you cool in the hottest of weather, even with long sleeves. You can also find pants with similar qualities, that breathe but are water-resistant and have a UPF rating. This means you can stay out longer and endure the elements when other anglers have called it quits, giving you more opportunities to land the big one.

Vented Fishing Mask

Another performance piece of apparel that is essential is a high-quality fishing mask. Like the apparel above, a fishing mask will help protect you from the sun while keeping you cool. Make sure there is a mouth vent to prevent your sunglasses from fogging, and vents that direct cool air down your back. This is especially helpful when boating. Choose a stain- and odor-resistant mask to keep yourself comfortable.

Swimbaits

If you are fishing bass, you probably want to have shad bait. It’s a bass’ favorite meal to gorge on for the upcoming winter. You will find great opportunities in fall as the shad are moving from freshwater into saltwater. Your presentation should be a steady retrieve, with the baits swimming just a few feet from the surface.

Jerkbaits

If they aren’t going for the shad swimbait, go with a slow, erratically moving jerkbait that also suggests it is a shad. If you see fish breaking the surface or baitfish fleeing predators, go for the jerkbait first.

About Gillz®

As long as he can remember, Kent Hickman has been an angler. He discovered his love for fishing at a young age and took every opportunity to do so. And growing up in his native Florida, there was no shortage of opportunities. That love inspired him to try his hand at going professional, and he joined the tournament circuit. However, Kent encountered an issue: the conditions professional anglers faced were often unforgiving, and he couldn’t find fishing apparel that rose to the challenge. He needed gear that kept him cool, dry, and comfortable while protecting him from exposure to the elements and the harmful rays of the unrelenting Florida sun. Kent decided to meet the challenge himself, and in 2009 he founded Gillz® to provide his fellow anglers stylish high-performance fishing gear, shirts for fishing, fishing masks, accessories, and additional high-quality fishing apparel.
